School Dropouts

What is it with school dropouts? Most of them seem to be successful very early in life. Could it be because they dropout immediately after realizing their potentials and abilities? I think getting out of school at a tender age of 9 or 15 to pursue your dreams is rather absurd considering that at this age most of us still depend on our parents for basic needs. Let me take this golden opportunity to thank and appreciate parents who let their children follow their desires and dreams when they want to. Kudos also goes to those who appreciate the ideas of the young and support them with whatever means they have to ensure that they realize their dreams.

History has it that the majority of school dropouts come from poor families who don’t have the ability to educate their children to university levels. However, some rich families also cry. Take an example of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, a man whom I respect and admire very much who upon receiving a PC from his dad decided to quit school at the age of 16 to pursue his dreams. My question is, supposing Mr. Gates could have continued with his studies up to a higher level, could he have achieved his dreams? Chances are that his initial desires could have been converted into other dreams.

May be he could have enrolled for a medical course or even an accountant in some tertiary institution. Lets do the math, enrolling for a medical course could have taken him not less than six years, add four to five years of his secondary education and probably he could have furthered his education to a PHD that could have taken him not less than five years. Practically it could have taken the young man some other 16 years to realize his dream that he had not desired but just as a formality of going through the education system.

I can’t talk about school dropouts without mentioning a man that I know personally. Mr. Vital is a humble man who hails from Molo district. Vital as fate may have it, was born in a poor family and was not able to continue with his primary education. He left school in standard four. He told me that after quitting school he decided to venture in charcoal burning as away to help his family get some income. To cut the long story short, Vital is now a prominent and respected business man that is commanding the largest shares in the town of Molo. Where he got his entrepreneurship skills I can’t tell, all I know is that he owns tall buildings in the town and employs not less than 500 employees. What is it with school drop outs?

I know there are many examples of successful school dropouts out there that you know of and you would wish to talk about them.
